Young people involved in the film for Government Office South West

Back in 2003, in Wells, Somerset, 2BU began as a youth group for gay lads, with the aim of providing a safe space where we could say it's okay ‘to be you’ and where with support, those who attended would become comfortable with their sexuality and gain confidence from others like them, as well as being able to seek advice and guidance around issues relevant to their situation.

Since it began the group has extended its reach to lesbian and bisexual young people becoming an LGB youth support group.  Although we are not an LGBT group (Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender)  we have had several transgender young people come along too. The project has been involved in and won one of the first ever 4 Front Awards run by the Camelot Foundation. Three of the group were then involved in the design team for the Foundation's second set of awards.

As part of the Connexions OFSTED inspection the project was seen as ‘Outstanding’ and we were involved in producing a short film for Government Office South West, one of 16 films showing projects of ‘Best practice’ (you can see the film in the section "2BU films")

In 2007 we had several 2BU groups around Somerset, however it was decided by the young people that one larger group would give a greater experience and so, with the support of funding from Somerset’s Youth Opportunity Fund, the groups came together and part of the funding enabled us to subsidize  transport costs, enabling LGB young people from various parts of the county to come together.

The group was founded by Andrew, a Connexions Personal Adviser, Andrew continues to run the group with Dan and Lisa who are qualified youth workers. Dan also acts as our outreach worker is able to offer support to young people outside the group and can meet at school or at a place the young person feels safe (like a coffee shop)

Andrew, Dan and Lisa can be contacted for advice or support by young people, parents /carers or teachers. Our details can be found in  the 'Contact us' section of our website.

The Group currently meets every Wednesday 6pm - 8pm in Taunton

Due to the nature of the group we do not publicise where the group is held
